‘Cthulhu’s Reach: Devil Reef’ Makes an Appearance at PAX East With New Developer Walkthrough [Video]

While it’s still in Early Access on Steam, Cthulhu’s Reach: Devil Reef made an appearance at PAX East with a brand-new walkthrough from developer The Fine Arc. The video shows off the Lovecraftian roguelike’s newest playable character, Florence, along the latest update which features new incantations, weapon upgrades, and enemies.

The update introduces a complete rework of the incantation system for Cthulhu’s Reach: Devil Reef, featuring 20+ unique incantations that now interact directly with your loadout and character stats. As well, players can now toast their foes with the new flamethrower, allowing you to attack multiple enemies at once. You’ll need the upgrades, as familiar terror has returned in The Deep One from Act 2, fully reimagined as a more formidable foe.

Along with the new content, the update also implements balancing tweaks from tuning enemy behaviour, to weapon damage curves and resource scaling. The ultimate goal with these changes is to enhance the tension without tipping into frustration.

Cthulhu’s Reach: Devil Reef takes place in the 1920s, where luck has abandoned you, leaving you gripped by debt and entangled by the local gangster, Mr. Blackwood. Your path veers to the accursed seaside town of Innsmouth, where a hidden treasure is rumoured to lie within Devil Reef. Your hope is to use the treasure to erase all debt and appease Mr. Blackwood.

However, what you thought would be an easy treasure hunt turns fast as you venture deeper into Devil Reef. The once-promising labyrinth reveals its sinister nature. Corridors contort, and eldritch horrors multiply, presenting a daunting challenge.
