With some justification, the Stamford Bridge faithful are asking how a team that were the Champions League holders this time three years ago has suffered such a marked decline. The obvious answer is that Roman Abramovich was forced to sell the club following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The BlueCo Group, fronted by Todd Boehly, arrived with its own ideas about how to make Chelsea, and European football in general, more efficient. The hubristic Boehly and his associates have since realised that running a top-level football club is not as easy as they thought. Chelsea have spent a huge amount of money on BlueCo’s watch, yet they are still far away from challenging – never mind winning – the Premier League title. Chelsea fans voiced their displeasure at the regression ahead of their home game against Southampton last week, extracting a response from Boehly. “It’s par for the course. The reality is the sooner you learn you’re not going to keep all people happy all the time, freedom shows up,” he said at the Business of Football summit. “You’re trying to get on a plan, execute a plan, realise things aren’t linear and if you’re in the right direction you feel better. The trend is in the right direction and that’s the thing that really matters. In June it’ll be three years, that’s not a lot of time. Especially in an industry where there’s so little downtime.” A top-five finish in the Premier League and the Conference League trophy would quieten some of the displeasure, at least for a while. Yet Chelsea are actually in a dangerous position in this tournament. Going all the way would merely be par for the course. Failing to claim the prize would be seen as a massive failure given their financial resources relative to the rest of the competition. Chelsea breezed through the league phase, but their overall form has taken a hit since that concluded in December. Indeed, since Christmas Day only five Premier League clubs have amassed fewer points than Enzo Maresca’s men. Boehly is wrong: the trend is not currently in the right direction. Christopher Nkunku to score any time
Christopher Nkunku has had a frustrating time at Chelsea so far.
The France international got injured during pre-season following his move from RB Leipzig in the summer of 2023. By the time he returned to full fitness, Cole Palmer had established himself as Chelsea’s go-to attacking midfielder – Nkunku’s favoured position.
The 27-year-old has had a run in the team of late thanks to Nicolas Jackson’s injury, but he has still only started eight out of 65 Premier League matches since his transfer.
Nkunku did impress in the league phase, though, scoring five goals as Chelsea cruised through in first place.
Marc Guiu was the only Chelsea player to make the net bulge more often, but he is out with a hamstring injury. Nkunku is therefore the best pick in the anytime scorer market for the clash with Copenhagen.
