A Concord developer has spoken out in defense of Bungie’s Marathon following player reactions to the latter’s reveal. While acknowledging that Concord fell short, former Firewalk Studios senior visual effects artist Stephan Williams urged fans not to write off Marathon prematurely.

Marathon dubbed ‘Concord 2.0’ by some players

Williams originally shared his thoughts last week in a viral Reddit thread that has since been locked. Expanding on his thoughts while speaking to MP1st, the developer said that he felt compelled to speak out because he constantly saw Marathon being likened to Concord, with some celebrating the latter’s fate and hoping the same happens to Bungie’s upcoming shooter.

“Reveling in the idea that someone is going to lose their income, and potentially affect their career, or lose the ability to provide for their family, is beyond comprehension,” Williams said in a statement. “Hoping for someone to lose all they have worked hard for, because you don’t like the art style, the fact that they used an animation (could be placeholder)…”

In his original post on Reddit, Williams had asked players not to punish Bungie for Firewalk’s mistakes, reminding them that developers work hard to make something special and it’s “gut wrenching” enough to see projects fail.

Marathon is scheduled for release on September 23, 2025. It’ll be a premium title but Sony has not announced its price yet.
