Check Out This VFX Breakdown From 'The Substance'

When I was watching The Substance, sometimes through my fingers when something gross was happening; the whole time, I kept thinking, "How did they do this?" Well, I have been waiting since before the Oscar run to get a VFX breakdown on what I consider to be one of the best and most inventive movies from last year. Now, it's finally here. The French company la Compagnie Générale des Effets Visuels put a breakdown on YouTube that I think is really special and shows how they did those killer effects. Let's dive in. The Substance -- VFX Breakdown What is cool about the movies is that it doesn't matter what country something was made in, great stories have no borders. Now, let's go over a little bit of what we see in the video. The Eye: It kicks off with a striking close-up of an eye dramatically splitting in two, quickly followed by a look at the underlying 3D model. We can see how this effect was digitally built and then rendered in the movie. Wounds: Part of the main plot is climbing out of a massive body wound, to build it, we see the digital compositing and cleanup done to make it feel seamless.Building Environments: In order to change POVs in the movie and get a mirror shot, a classic blue screen setup is shown, Then, they add in a fully realized bathroom environment. The video even walks us through the creation process, from the basic wireframe to the polished final render.Body Horror: The breakdown doesn't shy away from the more graphic elements, showing the effects behind bloody teeth, unsettling body deformations, and even a disturbing face-melting sequence. In this short breakdown, it's cool to see the artistry on display and a testament to the technical skill involved in this high level of VFX. I like videos like this one because they peel back the digital layers to show the complex work required to bring the director's vision, no matter how fantastic or disturbing, to life on screen.Let me know what you think in the comments.
