Canucks’ Thatcher Demko on off-season extension: ‘I want to be here’

Thatcher Demko intends to continue his career with the Vancouver Canucks.

The goalie, who is eligible to sign a contract extension during the off-season, said during the team’s end-of-season availability on Friday that he hopes a deal can get done.

“I’ve always wanted to be a Canuck since Day 1. I want to be here, obviously was drafted here and, yeah, I mean, I’d like to get an extension done and stay here,” Demko said.

Demko, 29, has one year remaining on the five-year, $25 million contract he signed ahead of the 2021-22 season.

He played just 23 games this season amid injury, going 10-8-3 with an .889 save percentage and 2.90 goals-against average.

Demko did not appear in a game until Dec. 10 after a rare knee injury prevented him from training during the off-season.

For his career, the San Diego native has played 242 games for the Canucks, recording 126 wins on the strength of a .910 save percentage.
