Canadian NCAA Roundup: Omojafo, Robert Morris going to March Madness

Canada’s Josh Omojafo stepped up when his team needed him most.

The Hamilton, Ont. native had a game-high 24 points and 13 rebounds as the Robert Morris Colonials beat the Youngstown State Penguins 89-78 in the Horizon League men’s basketball final Tuesday in Indianapolis.

The win sends Robert Morris (26-8) to March Madness for the first time since 2015.

Omojafo is in his first year at the Pennsylvania school after playing two years of Division II at Gannon.

He is averaging 11 points and 3.5 rebounds on the season.

Nembhard, Gonzaga take crown

Ryan Nembhard and the Gonzaga Bulldogs exacted revenge on the Saint Mary’s Gaels.

The star point guard, from Aurora, Ont., had 10 points, six assists and three steals as Gonzaga upset 19th-ranked Saint Mary’s 58-51 in the West Coast Conference final Tuesday in Las Vegas.

Last year, Saint Mary’s topped Gonzaga in the conference championship game.

Once again, both teams will hear their names called on Selection Sunday this year.

Mack attack

Canada’s Mack Konig and the Montana Lady Griz are authoring their own version of March Madness.

The Milton, Ont. native scored a career-high 29 points as Montana stunned Northern Arizona 71-67 in the Big Sky conference semifinals on Tuesday in Boise, Idaho.

Montana finished sixth in the conference and has an overall record of 14-17, but is now just one win away from earning a spot in the NCAA women’s championship tournament. Northern Arizona is 26-7.

Konig, Montana’s leading scorer, was voted second-team All-Big Sky in her third season with the squad.

Against Northern Arizona, Konig shot nine-for-15 from the field and nine-of-10 from the free-throw line. She added five assists and three rebounds.

Konig gave Montana the lead for good, 65-64, when she sank a pair of free throws with 1:07 left. She followed with a jumper and two more free throws to seal the win.

Montana will face top-seeded Montana State in the tournament final on Wednesday, with a berth in the national championship tournament on the line. Montana hasn’t gone to the tournament since 2015.

Konig comes from a basketball family. Her older sister, Aislinn, played for North Carolina State.

Maine man

Canada’s Kellen Tynes had a team-leading 13 points and 13 rebounds as the Maine Black Bears beat the host Vermont Catamounts 57-42 in an America East men’s semifinal on Tuesday.

The six-foot-three senior guard, from Dartmouth, N.S., is Maine’s third- leading scorer this season.

Jaden Clayton of Whitby, Ont., added nine points for Maine.

Sam Alamuto of Ajax, Ont., had eight points for Vermont in a game featuring rosters with a combined eight Canadians.

Maine will face host Bryant on Saturday in Rhode Island for a spot in March Madness.

Maine, looking to make its first March Madness appearance in school history, is in the America East final for the first time since 2004.
