Hughes, from Dundas, Ont., shot an 8-under 63 in his first round, one stroke better than Seamus Power at the alternate-field event.
Though he missed the cut at his last event, Hughes has been playing some of his best golf in recent tournaments.
He tied for third at the RBC Heritage after getting in on a sponsor’s exemption and finished 10th at the Houston Open.
Hughes, 34, is 47th in the FedExCup standings.
