The BYD Seal has been named the 2024 Japan EV of the Year, which marks the second time the Chinese automaker took home the top prize at the awards. Last year, it was the Dolphin in first place, with the Atto 3 also making it to the podium in third.

While the Dolphin secured a commanding win at last year’s awards, the Seal faced strong competition from the Honda N-Van e: and Hyundai Ioniq 5. The BYD EV managed to secure 195 points, which is only 13 points ahead of the Van e: that received 182 points, while the Ioniq 5 N made the podium with 176 points.

To be eligible for the 2024 Japan EV of the Year, EVs must be released in Japan between October 2023 and November 2024. An online vote featuring 15 models is then conducted involving 374 representatives from media outlets and key figures from December 9, 2024 to January 31, 2025 to determine the three top finishers.

EVs that made the shortlist this time, aside from the three mentioned above, include the Volvo EX30, Lexus RZ 300e, Mitsubishi Minicab EV, Audi SQ8 Sportback e-tron, MINI Cooper Electric, Tesla Model 3 Performance, BMW iX1 eDrive20, Nissan Ariya Nismo, Lotus Emeya, Fiat 600e, Jeep Avenger and Mercedes-Benz G580 with EQ Technology (we just call it the electric G).

The Japan EV of the Year was launched in 2022 and is an initiative by Enechange and EVsmart blog. The first winner in 2022 was the Nissan Sakura, followed by the Dolphin in 2023 and now, the Seal in 2024.
