Paxton Schultz, welcome to the big leagues.
Mere hours after having his contract selected by the Toronto Blue Jays, Schultz showed out in his MLB debut against the Seattle Mariners Sunday afternoon.
The 27-year-old reliever allowed just two hits over 4.1 innings. But perhaps what was most impressive were his eight strikeouts, which tied an MLB record for punchouts by a relief pitcher in their big-league debut.
He had nine strikeouts over 8.2 innings in Triple-A Buffalo.
Schultz entered the game in the second inning after starter Easton Lucas allowed six runs over 1.2 innings. The two hits surrendered by the right-hander were the only two Seattle baserunners while he was on the mound.
The Blue Jays called up righty Dillon Tate along with Schultz Sunday morning after placing Nick Sandlin on the 15-day injured list and designating Jacob Barnes for assignment.
