Easton Lucas‘s first big-league start was a good one.
Stepping in to the Toronto Blue Jays rotation Wednesday after Max Scherzer’s early-season setback, Lucas delivered five scoreless innings against the Washington Nationals.
The 28-year-old southpaw threw 74 pitches — 45 of them for strikes — while allowing just one hit and two walks. He also struck out three, using a four-pitch mix to keep Washington hitters off balance.
Lucas averaged 93.1 m.p.h. with his fastball and topped out at 94.9.
He was replaced by fellow lefty Brendon Little in the sixth.
Selected in the 14th round of the 2019 draft by the Miami Marlins, Lucas has landed with five organizations in his professional career. He made his MLB debut with the Athletics in 2023.
Toronto claimed the Thousand Oaks, Calif., native off waivers from the Detroit Tigers last August. Lucas threw 4.2 innings for the Blue Jays in 2024 over two relief appearances.
The Blue Jays built Lucas up as a starter this spring, where he pitched to a 8.64 ERA over 8.1 innings and four outings.
