Bayern Munich will miss ‘Marmite footballer’ Eric Dier – he’s not just Harry Kane’s mate
Harry Kane has taken the headlines for finally winning a trophy, but there was another Tottenham ex-pat right by his side, also emotionally celebrating his first piece of silverware. That was Eric Dier and the pair shared pictures, arm in arm, on social media. Kane and Dier celebrated their first trophy togetherInstagram Dier, too, had lost in three finals with Spurs in nearly a decade at the club, where he played 365 times. The 31-year-old defender has been just as important to this Bayern Munich Bundesliga success as great pal Kane, but perhaps does not get the credit he deserves. “He’s a Marmite footballer,” Trans Euro Express host Danny Kelly said. “You either love him or hate him. I suspect every team needs two Eric Diers in it.” Dier reunited with Kane at Bayern six months after the striker’s £100million transfer from the north London club. He joined on an initial loan, then completed a free transfer to the Bavarians with a one-year deal. Dier will again become a free agent this summer and will head to Ligue 1 with Monaco. Bayern Munich wanted him to stay, with boss Vincent Kompany effusive in his praise for the defender. “Eric is a player with a lot of experience who knows what to do in these moments,” said Kompany in January after a key performance. “Players like Eric have character and always prioritise the team.” But Dier turned down a contract extension at the Allianz Arena to move elsewhere. Dier has become a popular member of the Bayern dressing roomGetty European football journalist Andy Brassell outlined just how key he has been on and off the pitch for Bayern over the last 18 months. “That will be a loss for Bayern. They will feel that,” Brassell said. “In terms of on pitch, they’ve played him rather more than they hoped to in the last month or two because they’ve had a raft of defensive injuries. “So it’s been him and Kim Min-jae at centre back and whether Kim has got a long term future there, who knows? I suspect he might not. “Dier has always been best foot forward, ready to help at any moment. “But really, it’s the impact that he’s had on the dressing room and various coaches, not just [Vincent] Kompany, but Thomas Tuchel. He brought him in in the first place and really loved him. “I think because Dier has this maturity and this worldliness to him, people, because he’s a bit slow, think he’s older than he is. But he’s not. Dier has played an important role as a squad player at Bayern over the last 18 months “I think we’ve seen this sort of miscasting with Manchester United, haven’t we? When you look at players like Casimiro and Harry Maguire getting pelters. If a player doesn’t have extraordinary pace, you need to surround them with the right players and that’s not always been the case. “Eric Dier has sometimes been exposed by the teams he’s been in, not so much in this Bayern side, but he has been really useful.” Dier has made 26 appearances for Bayern this season, including 19 in the Bundesliga and two key goals. Kane himself acknowledged that it has been a ‘long journey’ for the pair after suffering trophy heartbreak in the past. The striker said: “We watched the game together. After the final whistle, the emotions were running high and I immediately hugged Eric. We’ve had a long journey together. It was just something special. “There were a lot of emotions, a lot of feelings in that moment and still are now.
