Bayern Munich are back on their Bundesliga throne. After finishing third last season, it was imperative that Bayern reclaimed the title this time around. They have realised that goal with two games to spare.

A victory over RB Leipzig last weekend would have got Bayern over the line. However, they could only manage a 3-3 draw against the Champions League chasers.

It did not matter in the end. Bayer Leverkusen, the defending champions, were held to a 2-2 draw by Freiburg the following day. That made Bayern uncatchable in top spot.

It is impossible to deny that Vincent Kompany’s team are worthy winners. They rose to top spot after thumping Holstein Kiel 6-1 on September 1, and no one has managed to dislodge them since.

Leverkusen made a sluggish start to the campaign and that ultimately proved costly. Since the November international break, Xabi Alonso’s side have picked up one more point than Bayern. The title was lost in the first 10 rounds of fixtures.

Bayern’s exit from the Champions League at the quarter-final stage shows that there is still plenty of work to do. The Bavarians are not yet ready to go all the way in Europe. More will be expected in that competition next term.

Yet given this is Kompany’s debut campaign at the helm, a title triumph must be viewed as a good outcome for 2024/25. 

Before last season Bayern had taken the Bundesliga for granted, but Leverkusen showed that they could go toe to toe with the German giants. They then retained Alonso and their championship-winning squad, so it was never a guarantee that Bayern would get back on top this year.

“We can take a moment now to enjoy winning the Bundesliga, what an incredible feeling!” Kompany said last weekend. “I want to congratulate the players for their outstanding effort throughout the season. You’ve done this together. You’ve won it as a team.”

Bayern will participate in the enlarged Club World Cup this summer and their attention will soon turn towards planning for next season. For now, though, Bayern are ready to celebrate their Bundesliga success in front of their own supporters.

Borussia Monchengladbach will aim to spoil the party, but this looks set to be a tough 90 minutes for Gerardo Seoane’s side.

Gladbach, who came 14th last time out, will now be targeting a top-half finish, but that is by no means certain. Having Bayern as one of their last two opponents does not help.

Kompany’s team will be keen to put on a show in front of their supporters having wrapped up the title when they were not on the field last weekend.

Goals are on the cards in this one, and it is hard to look past a Bayern win.

Now that the title is in the bag, Bayern Munich might not play with quite the same intensity as they would in a must-win match.

That does not mean they will carry less of a threat going forward. Bayern will still create plenty of chances, with their attackers feeling free to express themselves.

At the same time, it should be possible for Borussia Monchengladbach to create chances of their own.

Bayern’s defence can be got at, as RB Leipzig demonstrated in that 3-3 draw at the Red Bull Arena.
