Aston Villa vs Newcastle United predictions

Aston Villa were knocked out of the Champions League on Tuesday night. A second leg 3-2 win over PSG wasn’t enough to overturn a two goal deficit from the first leg. 

Despite the two-legged 5-4 defeat, Unai Emery’s team can’t be too despondent. From 5-1 down on aggregate, his Villa team came very close to pulling off one of the greatest comebacks in the club’s history. 

Furthermore, Villa’s recent good form has put them back in contention for a top-five finish and a place in European football’s elite club competition again next season.

As well as having top-five football on the agenda, Villa are also in the semi-final of the FA Cup. Their season is far from over.

Villa will start Matchday 33 sitting seventh in the Premier League table. They are just one point behind Manchester City in fifth and three behind Nottingham Forest in fourth.

Assuming Arsenal are joining Liverpool in next season’s Champions League, Villa are in a five-team fight for the remaining three places. And they’ve hit top form just at the right time.

One of the other teams in the hunt for a top-five finish is Newcastle United. 

Like Villa, the Magpies are enjoying a strong finish to the season. Eddie Howe’s team is currently on a five-match winning streak in the Premier League.

Over the last week, Newcastle has beaten Manchester United 4-1 and on Wednesday they thrashed Crystal Palace 5-0. The Geordies are scoring for fun.

The winning run has seen Newcastle climb to third in the Premier League. They are now on 59 points from 32 matches. 

Newcastle are five points clear of sixth-place Chelsea and in a great position to claim one of the Premier League’s five Champions League places. 

Furthermore, the Toon are now only four points behind second-place Arsenal, who have a Champions League semi-final to look forward to, and may well be distracted in their Premier League run-in.

Furthermore, Villa have conceded in their last eight home matches. While in their current form, it’s hard to imagine Newcastle won’t score against the Clarets.

Marcus Rashford to score or assist

Rashford played like a man possessed against PSG on Tuesday. 

He caused one of the best teams in Europe no end of problems, and it was no coincidence that Villa lost a bit of their edge when he was substituted for Ollie Watkins in the second half.

Rashford provided an assist in the 3-2 win over PSG. He now has two assists in his last three Champions League matches. 

Rashford only has one Premier League goal and three assists for Villa in his eight matches. The stats hardly leap off the page at you. But he has been finding his feet at his new club and getting better every week.

If he plays against Newcastle like he did against PSG, he looks like a good bet to be involved in a goal one way or another.
