The “best” pair of smart glasses we’ve seen in today’s market probably has to be Meta’s Ray-Ban glasses. They don’t pack augmented reality features, but they’re stylish, blend well with everyday clothing, and are relatively affordable. We’ve heard the rumors that Meta is working on a pair with a built-in display, but Apple wants to beat them to the punch. A new report claims Apple has a pair of smart glasses in development that will make full use of AI.

Apple’s AI smart glasses in development

In the latest issue of his Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman claims that Apple is developing smart glasses that harness the power of AI. This AI will help the glasses analyze their surroundings and feed that information back to the wearer.

According to Gurman, “Apple continues work on its own version, code-named N50. This device isn’t close to being ready yet, but the idea is to turn glasses into an Apple Intelligence device.” We’re unsure how this will work or what form this feature will take. However, it could be a long way from reality.

For starters, Apple Intelligence is one gigantic hot mess right now. Apple promised a lot features for its own AI system at WWDC 2024. Unfortunately, the company has fallen so very far off the mark it’s not even funny. From wrongly summarizing notifications and a promise of a revamped Siri that hasn’t come to pass, you can’t blame us if we’re skeptical that these glasses will be Apple’s next big thing.

Next, Apple’s Vision Pro can hardly be called a success either. It is a technological marvel, but its ecosystem and price tag put it well out of reach for the average consumer. If customers don’t know what it’s like to own a Vision Pro, they might not necessarily see the advantages of owning a pair of smart glasses either.

Apple is still lagging behind

It’s unlikely that Apple will be able to beat Meta to the market. Last we heard, Meta has at least three pairs of smart glasses in the works. One of which is an upgraded version of the Ray-Ban glasses with a built-in display. The other is a pair of smart glasses with dual displays. Lastly, we heard that the company could also be working with Oakley on a pair of smart glasses with a more sporty design.

If Apple wants to compete, the Cupertino company definitely has their work cut out for them.
