Ever since the shocking announcement of Amazon acquiring the James Bond film franchise rights, concerns have been raised about their creative direction. Without 007’s established producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, it’s very possible the franchise could go down a path similar to Disney’s handling of Star Wars. Now Amazon CEO Andy Jassy (per Deadline) responds to such fan concerns.
“We don’t have a plan yet on what the next theme is going to be. We haven’t – nobody’s written the story yet. But we will take great care. It’s an amazing franchise that we care a lot about and that we expect to develop over a long period of time.”
The quality of future Bond films was also raised regarding the use of AI in cinema. As a 63-year-old franchise with quality screenwriters ranging from Richard Maibaum to Cary Joji Fukunaga, Jassy does not envision that “AI is going to write a Bond movie any time soon”. In other words, there’s no cutting corners creatively for the next installment.
“We are incredibly honored to have the ability to help shepherd the Bond franchise for the next generation. And we have amazing filmmakers that we have hired over time at MGM Amazon Studios.”
While Amazon continues to tease Bond’s new path and the potential actors who could fit the tux, questions remain on why EON Productions decided now was the time to relinquish control of Ian Fleming’s iconic character. A Wall Street Journal interview with Broccoli revealed EON’s conflict Amazon over their business practices. However, The Hollywood Reporter suggested another theory that Amazon’s Jeff Bezos simply ponied up the cash to “get rid of her” in response to the interview.

Another question on the table is regarding a possible James Bond Cinematic Universe under Amazon’s control. Given the shocking finale of No Time to Die, it is very likely the studio will want a clean slate with new actors in the place of M, Moneypenny, and Q. It is hard to imagine any longtime fan who finds that concept compelling since many attempts to universe-build outside the MCU have largely failed.
