With the Hari Raya exodus beginning in a week, police will deploy 6,957 personnel throughout Malaysia. Op Selamat 24, in conjunction with this year’s Hari Raya Aidilfitri, will run from March 29 to April 3, reports the New Straits Times.
Speaking to reporters, JSPT (Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department) director Datuk Seri Mohd Yusri Hassan Basri said the operation is to reduce road accidents and fatalities while ensuring smooth traffic flow during the festive season. Yusri said 25 hotspots and 46 other black spots on major highways were identified for continuous monitoring due to the frequent number of accidents.
“Another 407 hotspots and 76 black spots nationwide, including federal, state, and municipal roads, are under the department’s surveillance to ensure road users can travel safely,” said Yusri. He also said other traffic control measures will be implemented including Ops Lancar where 2,742 personnel will be on duty from March 23 to April 6.
Additionally, the police Air Operations Unit will monitor traffic congestion on highways and roads expected to experience an increase in vehicles. Yusri advised road users to obey traffic laws, and be patient and courteous when driving to ensure road safety.
