21 New Songs Out Today

So many artists, so many songs, so little time. Each week we review a handful of new albums (of all genres), round up even more new music that we’d call “indie,” and talk about what metal is coming out. We post music news, track premieres, and more all day. We update a playlist weekly of some of our current favorite tracks. Here’s a daily roundup with a bunch of interesting, newly released songs in one place.

BONNIE “PRINCE” BILLY – “TURNED TO DUST (ROLLING ON)”

Bonnie “Prince” Billy’s new album The Purple Bird is out this Friday and here’s one last early taste, “Turned to Dust (Rolling On)” which opens the record.

LA SÉCURITÉ – “KETCHUP”

“Though we knew we wanted to write a song about small talk, when we started working on the music, I was mostly scat singing, save for the words ‘L’affaire est ketchup.’ Hence, the song title,” says La Sécurité’s Éliane Viens-Synnott of the band’s new single. “We noticed while playing the song live, that the tune got people bouncing all over the place. The track seems to have that special energy. To keep that energy, Renny [Wilson] went all out with the production. To be fair, we did suggest that he made every track ‘clip.’”

LUCRECIA DALT – “COSA RARA (FT. DAVID SYLVIAN)”

Lucrecia Dalt has announce new EP cosa rara which will be out February 28 via RVNG Intl. The first single is the title track and features former Japan frontman David Sylvian. She says: “This song originated from a drum loop that Alex Lazaro sent to me — like a secret agent of sound infiltrating my brain, every loop he makes feels like it’s got the DNA of the song embedded in its groove, and I just have to wait with a microphone in hand for the moment of fine-tuning to bust it all out. As the first part of the track came together, I felt this wild urge to slow everything down to a sultry dub tempo, and that’s when David jumped in, adding his own unique flavor, textured voice, and guitars.”

DANA GAVANSKI – “LEAVING HOME AGAIN”

Dana Gavanski has announced a new piano-based EP, Again Again, due March 14 via Full Time Hobby. “The album is a bit of a new direction for me,” she says. “I wanted to record and write more directly, without too many takes, trying to keep it quite live and not worrying to much about bum notes or sounding out of tune.” It features recent single “Business of the Attitude,” as well as the just-released “Leaving Home Again,” both of which are gorgeous doses of folky art pop.

CHRIS BLACK – “MY DRUG BUDDY” (LEMONHEADS COVER FT. KEVIN MORBY, WAXAHATCHEE, MJ LENDERMAN, BRAD COOK & EVAN DANDO)

After performing the song with Kevin Morby at “How Long Gone”‘s Boston show in 2023, the podcast’s co-host Chris Black recorded a new rendition of Lemonheads’ “My Drug Buddy” with Morby, Waxahatchee, MJ Lenderman, Brad Cook, and Lemonheads’ Evan Dando. “Katie was going to Durham to finish a few things with Brad,” Black says. “She said I should come at the same time, so I flew to Durham, sat on Brad’s studio couch, and watched her and MJ Lenderman record a beautiful cover of ‘Wrecking Ball’ by Gillian Welch for a charity compilation in basically one take. Then we cued up ‘My Drug Buddy,’ I sang the second verse and some group vocals. Katie added her vocals, MJ Lenderman played drums, and then Brad added some bass and harmonica. The cherry on top was Brad’s connection to one of Evan Dando’s engineers, who got the legend himself to send in a handful of vocal takes for us to choose from. I have never had more fun in my life. I recorded a cover of a song I have listened to since high school with some of my favorite musicians. People I deeply respect and who genuinely soundtrack my life. All of whom have more talent than I could dream of possessing. I called it ‘Indie Make-a-Wish’ because that is what it felt like.”

GREGORY UHLMANN, JOSH JOHNSON, SAM WILKES – “FRICA”

Jazz musicians Gregory Uhlmann, Josh Johnson, and Sam Wilkes have announced their debut album as a trio, Uhlmann Johnson Wilkes, due March 14 via International Anthem. Here’s the moving lead single “Frica.”
