Will Smith has poked fun at his slap at the Oscars on Chris Rock on his new album ‘Based On A True Story’.
The record, his first full-length project in 20 years, was released yesterday (March 28).
From the outset on the opening track, ‘Int. Barbershop – Day’ starts with the phrase: “Will Smith is cancelled” before Smith’s Fresh Prince collaborator DJ Jazzy Jeff and B. Simone, trade barbs about the rapper such as “Who the fuck Will Smith think he is?” and “I ain’t never going to forgive him for that shit he did.”
It also tackles the Oscars incident more directly with the lyrics: “I heard he won the Oscar but he had to give it back / And you know they only made him do that shit because he’s Black.”
The song later references Smith’s infamous response to Rock’s joke with the line: “Him and Jada both crazy girl, what you talkin’ bout? / You better keep his wife’s name out of your mouth.”
Smith became embroiled in controversy after slapping Rock onstage during the 2022 Oscars.
During his appearance, Rock commented that he couldn’t wait to see Jada Pinkett Smith in “G.I. Jane 2”, alluding to her bald head. The actor had previously been vocal about suffering from the autoimmune disease alopecia, sharing the effects of the condition with her followers on social media.
After Rock made the comment, Smith ran up on stage and took a swing at him before returning to his seat and shouting: “Keep my wife’s name out of your fucking mouth.”
Prior to the album being released, Smith dropped singles ‘Beautiful Scars‘, ‘You Can Make It’, ‘Work Of Art’ featuring his son Jaden and Russ and ‘Tantrum’ with Joyner Lucas.
Elsewhere, Smith recently announced his first-ever headline tour, with shows set to take place in the UK and Europe this summer.
Smith is scheduled to play numerous European festivals, as well as his own headline concerts in Hamburg, Hanover and Frankfurt.
In August, he’ll head to the UK for bill-topping gigs at Scarborough Open Air Theatre, Cardiff’s Bute Park, Manchester’s Victoria Warehouse, London’s O2 Academy Brixton, and The Halls in Wolverhampton.
Smith is due to wrap up his forthcoming tour with a performance at Zénith in Paris on September 2. You can purchase tickets for his UK dates here.
