Robert Wickens will make his debut in the Nürburgring 24 in June, having revealed plans to tackle the Eifel endurance classic in a Hyundai TCR car.
The Canadian racer, who made his IMSA WeatherTech SportsCar Championship GTD debut at last weekend’s Acura Grand Prix of Long Beach, will drive a Hyundai Elantra N TCR in the event.
The entry comes through a joint effort between Italian touring car squad Target Competition and Bryan Herta Autosport, which has taken Hyundai’s TCR program to multiple championships in IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge.
Last year, four of the brand’s Pilot Challenge drivers (Mason Filippi, Harry Gottsacker, Bryson Morris and Mark Wilkins) took Hyundai’s fourth consecutive TCR class victory at the N24.
“As an athlete, I’m constantly seeking ways to push myself and explore new opportunities to grow and hone my skills,” said Wickens.
“I’m always striving to be the best version of myself, both on and off the track. Hyundai, Bosch, and Bryan Herta Autosport have an incredible team spirit and I’m thrilled for this chance to return and compete in one of the world’s most demanding endurance races.”
For his N24 debut, Wickens will be utilizing the latest version of Bosch’s hand control driving system, which debuted in the Michelin Pilot Challenge last year and, in an adapted version, has also found its way into the DXDT Racing Chevrolet Corvette Z06 GT3.R that Wickens raced at Long Beach.
“After debuting our new Bosch brake system during our last two IMSA races of 2024, it was very clear that it was a big step forward in safety and in braking feel and consistency,” said Wickens.
“I was not able to be part of Hyundai’s success at the N24 in 2024, and I am grateful to have Bosch by my side to give me the chance to try again in 2025.”
Wickens was understood to have been working towards an N24 debut last year, but plans were curtailed when he suffered a significant accident during the opening round of the NLS.
He has, however, successfully competed on the Nurburgring’s Grand Prix circuit earlier in his career, most notably taking two of his six DTM race victories there.
