We've Never Seen This Side of Deborah Before on 'Hacks'

Editor's Note: The following contains spoilers for Hacks Season 4, Episode 4One of the key reasons why the Emmy-award-winning Max series Hacks works is because of the generational gap between its two main characters, Deborah Vance (Jean Smart) and Ava Daniels (Hannah Einbinder). Deborah, a 75-year-old Baby Boomer insult comic, and Ava, a 25-year-old Gen Z comedy writer from Los Angeles, should mix as well as oil and water, but eventually they realize their differences have a positive effect on each other. Rather than choosing which generation is "right," Hacks takes a neutral approach, showcasing the pros and cons of being from either generation. Exploring the similarities as much as the differences paves a path forward where humans can truly learn from each other's knowledge and experiences rather than causing a division that isn't productive or necessary.
