Alex Ross Perry’s Pavements is coming out at some point this year via MUBI; it’s a very meta, extremely Pavement movie that incorporates elements of rock documentaries, Oscar-bait biopics, and jukebox musicals to tell the story of the ’90s indie rock icons. There’s no word on a release date yet, but a trailer has been shared for Range Life: A Pavement Story, the fake biopic that’s being made within the the movie that stars Stranger Things’ Joe Keery as Stephen Malkmus, as well as Jason Schwartzman and Tim Heidecker as Matador Records’ Chris Lombardi and Gerard Cosloy, and others.

The trailer is billed as a “For Your Consideration” ad to those who vote for the Oscars, Golden Globes and other awards, and is soundtracked by one of those “dark” remixes of songs that are used so often in these — in this case, Pavement’s “Here.” It’s also got titles like “THE MUSIC…THE MAGIC…THE MALKMUS.” The trailer ends with that very apropos lyric from “Shady Lane”: “You’ve been chosen as an extra in the movie adaptation of the sequel to your life.” It’s all played very straight here but is much more obviously a joke within the PAVEMENTS film. Watch that below.

The real Stephen Malkmus will be on tour with his new band The Hard Quartet starting later this month.
