Veteran Actor John Lithgow Set To Play Dumbledore In Harry Potter TV Series

According to a new report from Deadline, actor John Lithgow is set to play Albus Dumbledore in HBO’s Harry Potter series. The news is rather surprising as last we heard, HBO were circling British actor Mark Rylance for the role. However, that must have not worked itself out, for whatever reason, as it was a trade report itself.

So get ready for Lithgow’s British accent folks. It looks like Lithgow will be Dumbledore across all the Seasons of the Harry Potter series. Actually, Lithgow’s last Emmy was for playing British legendary Prime Minister Winston Churchill in The Crown. So don’t have any concerns about the accent, Lithgow can pull it off.

Here’s what the trade reports,

‘A beloved actor is poised to play a beloved Harry Potter character. Six-time Emmy winner John Lithgow is in final negotiations to portray Professor Albus Dumbledore in HBO‘s high-profile series adaptation of the hugely popular fantasy books, sources tell Deadline.’

‘HBO declined to comment. “We appreciate that such a high-profile series will draw a lot of rumor and speculation,” the network said in a statement. “As we make our way through pre-production, we will only confirm details as we finalize deals.”’

FYI the same response was given for Rylance, so just bear that in mind folks.

Interesting choice, but not one I think the fans would have guessed. Rylance seems on paper a better fit. However, let’s not doubt Lithgow’s astounding acting abilities. The man always delivers in any role I’ve ever seen him in, even when the role isn’t all that. One thing I want to see in Dumbledore is a certain look in the eye that he knows more than he admits. That was true of both Richard Harris and Michael Gambon. I think both Rylance and Lithgow are capable of that level of acting, so all good.
