Trump to take 100 days victory lap on border, inflation with speech in Michigan

President Trump is expected to take a victory lap on the southern border and inflation during a speech in Michigan to mark his first 100 days back in the White House.

The speech will take place at 6 p.m. at Macomb Community College in Warren, and Trump is expected to focus on the two issues, arguing he delivered on his campaign promises, according to the White House.

Trump is expected to outline that he declared a national border emergency and launched a massive deportation effort, as well as invoking the Alien Enemies Act. The president’s use of the Aliens Enemies Act has been challenged in various lawsuits, and the Supreme Court last week halted the administration’s use of it to swiftly deport migrants to El Salvador who are being detained in portions of Texas, for now.

He will also outline that billions of dollars have been secured for the U.S. through investments from the private sector and that more than 130 countries have contacted the White House to strike deals on trade since Trump paused his hefty country-specific tariffs for 90 days. The pause kept 10 percent tariffs on trading partners and a 145 percent one on China.

Trump is expected to argue that inflation has cooled and that prices have lowered during his administration.

Consumer sentiment nosedived in April to the lowest level since the postpandemic inflation surge in July 2022, attributed to Trump’s tariff policies, according to the University of Michigan Survey of Consumers. And the Federal Reserve expects inflation to top out at 2.7 percent this year and to subside to 2.2 percent next year.

Additionally, Trump is expected to tout the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) on Tuesday as his administration has focused on identifying waste within the federal government. DOGE, which is led by billionaire technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, has targeted major agencies over the past 100 days and implemented staff cuts and overhauls of the workforce.

The remarks in the battleground state of Michigan, which Trump won in November, will be his first major speech outside of Washington since taking office. He traveled to California in January to assess wildfire damage and typically travels to his home in Palm Beach over the weekend.
