Trump Tariffs Delay Nintendo Switch 2 Pre-Orders

Nintendo has announced that pre-orders in the U.S. for the Nintendo Switch 2 will not be going live on April 9th so that the company can assess “the potential impact of tariffs and evolving market conditions” according to a statement given to GameSpot.

They add that: “Nintendo will update timing at a later date. The launch date of June 5, 2025 is unchanged.” Pre-orders for the console went live in Europe and the UK this week.

The news follows in the wake of US President Donald Trump imposing tariffs on trade with other countries – some hit more severely than others.

Nintendo imports into the US come from Vietnam and Cambodia, two countries that are being hit with some of the steepest tariffs (46% & 49%) as compared to the more lenient 10% of countries like the UK & Australia.

China at 54% and Japan at 24% are also being hit hard. The next round of tariffs will go into effect on April 9th.

The Financial Times indicates that hundreds of thousands of Switch 2 consoles have already been sent from Vietnam to Nintendo’s US facilities since the start of the year – speculating it could be in anticipation of Trump’s tariffs being implemented.

Much of the post-announcement discussion of the Nintendo Switch 2 console has been about its expensive price at $450 for the console and an $80 price tag for the games. That’s before trade tariffs potentially push those costs higher, though the FT report speculates the high price of the console at present could be Nintendo having the potential impact of tariffs in mind.

The talk comes as U.S. video game trade group the Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has warned that the new tariffs are “going to have a real and detrimental impact” on the game industry as a whole – especially on hardware and physical media.
