TikTok hired former Warner Bros. Discovery communications boss Nathaniel Brown as its Global Head of Corporate Communications on Monday, TheWrap has learned.
Brown joins TikTok a little more than a year after exiting WBD.
He also joins the popular video app as it faces an uncertain future in the U.S. TikTok is fast approaching the deadline on the 75-day extension President Trump gave ByteDance, its parent company, to sell TikTok’s American operation; President Trump’s extension, which he signed on his first day back in office, is set to expire on Ap. 5.
Zenia Mucha, TikTok’s chief brand and comms officer, shared Brown’s hiring in a note to staff on Monday.
“I’m happy to announce we’ve hired a new Global Head of Corporate Comms. @Nathaniel Brown joins us today to lead this important function, reporting to me. He’s based in New York City.”
Brown is a veteran comms executive with years of experience at some of the biggest media and entertainment companies. He joined Discovery in 2019, where he was the EVP of global communications, before the company merged with Warner Bros. and he became a WBD employee in 2022.
Prior to joining Discovery, Brown spent more than six years as senior vice president of corporate communications at 21st Century Fox. Before that, he served as SVP of corporate comms at MTV Networks and XM Satellite Radio and VP of corporate comms at Sony BMG.
After leaving WBD last year, Brown said he wanted to take some time off to travel and spend time with his family and friends before starting his next job.
TikTok was set to be banned on Jan. 19, after then-President Joe Biden signed a law last year, saying ByteDance had to offload its U.S. business. The chief concern among lawmakers was that the app doubled as a spyware app for China’s communist government. President Trump said earlier this month the U.S. government is talking to four potential buyers, with Oracle appearing to be the frontrunner to run TikTok in the U.S.
