The summer movie season officially began on Friday with the debut of Thunderbolts*, which is being viewed as a return to box office form for Marvel Studios, even though it's eying an opening weekend haul lower than that of the recent Captain America: Brave New World. The movie led the field on Friday, grossing $31.5 million. This includes the $11.5 million that it made in Thursday previews. It's all set to generate over $70 million in its first weekend of release, with the more bullish projections putting this figure at over $80 million. By comparison, Brave New World grossed $88 million in its three-day debut.
