Teenage phenom Maddox Schultz lifts Regina to Telus Cup win
Maddox Schultz. Remember the name. The 15-year-old phenom capped off an absurd triple-A season with the Regina Pat Canadians by lifting the Saskatchewan club to a 3-2 Telus Cup win over Quebec’s Chevaliers de Lévis. It was a three-point night for the youngster, but none were more important than the final one, as he netted the golden goal in overtime to secure the victory. Schultz made it look easy as he waltzed to the left face-off circle and wired a laserbeam of a wrist shot past goaltender Antoine Proulx. The craziest sight of the night, however, may have come after the goal as all the Regina players took off their helmets one by one to swarm Schultz, each revealing their bleached blonde hair like a flock of canaries crowding for a piece of bread. Schultz also dished out assists on Regina’s first two goals of the game, finishing off his Telus Cup run with an obscene 20 points (nine goals, 11 assists) in seven games — which led the field by six points. Past just his game-winner, Schulz tallied two hat tricks over the course of the week-long tourney and had a five-point game against the Okanagan Rockets of B.C. on Thursday. With his Telus Cup win, Schultz ends a prolific 2024-25 campaign. He was named MVP of the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League this season, helping the Pat Canadians advance to the national tournament for the first time since 2017. It’s the first Telus Cup title for the Pat Canadians since 1999 and their fifth overall. He had 43 goals and 50 assists in 44 regular-season games to go along with nine goals and 13 assists in 10 playoff outings in Saskatchewan. Schultz, who turned 15 last month, was considered a strong candidate to apply for major-junior exceptional-player status, which would have allowed him to play an entire season in the WHL next year (drafted players usually must wait a full year for a full season). But Schultz and his family have opted to enter the league under the new Western Canadian Development Model, which allows a player to play up to 34 regular-season WHL games if they have played up in age in minor hockey. Schultz likely will get to stay at home to play in the junior ranks after the Regina Pats won the WHL Draft Lottery earlier this month. The WHL Prospects Draft is May 7. Chicago Blackhawks star Connor Bedard, a former Pat, and defenceman Landon DuPont, who recently completed a strong first season with the Everett Silvertips, are the only players to have been granted exceptional-player status in the WHL.
