SUPERMAN Will Reportedly Include a "Major Casting Surprise" and It Could Be One of Two A-List Stars

James Gunn’s Superman already has an impressive ensemble cast, and the film will include an array of DC heroes and villains, but there may be even more surprises.According to Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider, the film is set to feature “some major casting surprises,” with speculation pointing to a well-known A-lister taking on the role of Superman’s Kryptonian father, Jor-El.Sneider speculates that Tom Cruise could be in the mix. Given Cruise’s recent deal with Warner Bros. where he’s set to develop both original films and franchise projects. Sneider writes: “Could DC have plans for Cruise? It’s possible… though I can only imagine him as Batman or as Superman’s biological father, Jor-El. There are said to be some major casting surprises in Gunn’s Superman, and I imagine Jor-El is one of them, so stay tuned on that front…”Another possibility is Chris Pratt. But Sneider was quick to point out that this might not happen, given Marvel’s ongoing plans for Star-Lord in the MCU. He said: “I thought it might be Gunn’s Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt — and who knows, it still might be — but a source suggested that Gunn wouldn’t do that to Marvel’s Kevin Feige, seeing as how we likely haven’t seen the last of Star-Lord in the MCU.”With Superman marking the first theatrical release of the new DC Universe, there’s a lot riding on its success. Some industry insiders believe Warner Bros. could face serious consequences, possibly even a Fox-style buyout if the film underperforms at the box office.Jor-El’s presence in the film hasn’t been confirmed, but the character has historically been played by big-name actors, from Marlon Brando in Superman: The Movie (1978) to Russell Crowe in Man of Steel (2013). If Gunn does include Jor-El, it would likely be in a brief but impactful moment, perhaps through a recorded message at the Fortress of Solitude or a falshback scene. That kind of limited screen time makes a big actor like Cruise possible. So, who will be the big surprise? If Jor-El does end up being a part of Superman, we’ll find out soon enough. Superman flies into theaters on July 11.
