Stereolab announce first new album in 15 years, share “Arial Troubles”

After some teasing and puzzles last week, Stereolab have now made it official: they’re releasing their first new album in 15 years. (It’s really 17 years as, 2010’s Not Music is comprised of unused songs from from 2008’s Chemical Chords.)  It’s titled Instant Holograms On Metal Film, and will be out May 23 via Duophonic / Warp. It features contributions from Bitchin’ Bajas’ Cooper Crain (who recorded and engineered the album) and Rob Frye, as well as Ben LaMar Gay, Ric Elsworth, Holger Zapf (Cavern Of Anti-Matter), Marie Merlet and Molly Read. Preorder the album on double clear vinyl in the BV shop.

The first single from the album is “Arial Troubles,” which is the song they sent out as a 7″ to select fans last week along with a word search puzzle that has the album title, song titles, and performers. It sounds like Stereolab in all the ways you want it to, and is very catchy. Watch the video, directed by Laurent Askienazy, below.

Stereolab will be on tour in North America this fall, and the first half of the run will be opened by MEMORIALS (the duo of Electrelane’s Verity Susman and Wire/It Hugs Back’s Matthew Simms). The second half will be opened by Dorothea Paas, Bitchin’ Bajas and Natural Information Society. There are two NYC shows: Brooklyn Steel on October 1 with MEMORIALS, and Brooklyn Steel on October 2 with Dorothea Paas & Bitchin’ Bajas and Natural Information Society. All dates are listed below.
