Stars pull Jake Oettinger after second period in Game 4 vs. Avalanche

Trailing 3-0 after two periods in Game 4 against the Colorado Avalanche on Saturday, Dallas Stars head coach Pete DeBoer made the decision to swap his goalies.

Jake Oettinger had stopped 31 of the 34 shots he faced through the opening 40 minutes, good for a respectable .912 save percentage, but was still replaced in favour of backup Casey DeSmith.

It was unclear if Dallas’ No. 1 netminder was dealing with an injury or if DeBoer was just trying to send a message to his team, but Oettinger was at the end of the Stars bench as the third period began and looked to be OK.

Oettinger was seemingly at his best in the second period, stopping 21 shots while Colorado controlled the pace of play, limiting Dallas to just five shots in the period.

The Avalanche scored two goals in the first period and one in the second — as Gabriel Landeskog found the back of the net for the first time since returning to Colorado’s lineup — and were outshooting Dallas by 20 as the game entered the second intermission.

During the regular season, the 26-year-old Oettinger continued to perform as one of the NHL’s top young goalies, posting a 36-18-4 record with a .909 save percentage and 2.59 goals-against average.

For his part, DeSmith was also excellent over 27 regular-season games. The 33-year-old had a 14-8-2 record, .915 save percentage and 2.59 GAA. The veteran last appeared in the post-season with the Vancouver Canucks during their opening-round series win over the Nashville Predators last April.
