Sony Pictures has boarded “Barbarian” filmmaker Zach Cregger’s new adaptation of the “Resident Evil” video game franchise after a bidding war for the director’s take on the property. The studio will release the film, titled “Resident Evil,” on Sept. 18, 2026.

Cregger wrote and will direct the new movie, based on the video game franchise about a world overrun by zombies due to a viral outbreak from an evil corporation. Shay Hatten is co-writing. Constantin Film is producing and co-financing the film. Constantin’s Robert Kulzer, Vertigo Entertainment’s Roy Lee and Miri Yoon and PlayStation Productions are also producing.

After an acting career, Cregger burst onto the scene as a filmmaker with his 2022 horror film “Barbarian,” which was released by 20th Century Studios and earned glowing reviews. His next script, “Weapons,” sparked a bidding war and landed at Warner Bros. That film, starring Josh Brolin and Julia Garner, will be released in January 2026.

Paul W.S. Anderson spearheaded the first “Resident Evil” film franchise, releasing the first film in 2002 starring Milla Jovovich. That series would eventually span six movies, then in 2021 a reboot was attempted with “Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” from Sony.
