However, she disappointed and faded out for a tame fourth place finish. She was weakening out of contention when she was virtually stopped due to State Man falling at the final hurdle. But she was sure to be fended off by Golden Ace regardless. Jade De Grugy on the other hand was a decent second to Lossiemouth in the mares’ hurdle. Comfortably beaten but still holds potential against Brighterdaysahead who’s tough to back at such a short price while Gordon Elliott has been struggling for winners recently. Lulamba Won on his first two starts over hurdles and only just denied by a neck to Poniros at Cheltenham Festival in March in the Triumph Hurdle. That horse was a surprise 100/1 winner for the now Champion Trainer Willie Mullins. Of which the trainer had as many as 11 runners in the Triumph and were close to being pipped by Nicky Henderson’s one. He was a big favourite but drifted in the odds with East India Dock being the favoured horse throughout the morning and up to the off. Lulamba stayed on well and with this being just his fourth hurdle start, third in Britain, I can see him going even better especially with the conditions. Unequal Love Tom Marquand is on board this William Haggas-trained mare, of which both have strike rates into the 20%. This five-year-old has won six from 13 attempts on the turf with a few close finishes too, including a third of 16 in the Group 1 Sprint Cup Stakes at Haydock in a field of 16. She wasn’t quite up there at Ascot in October but was still less than five lengths off the winner Kind Of Blue. Unequal Love won at this meeting on seasonal debut last year when returning from 203 days off and has a very similar route in, but of course now rated much higher dropping into this listed mares and fillies stakes aiming to win this for the second successive year. Beautiful Diamond This filly can go very well on the back of a break and she returns as a four-year-old to contest a race she placed a neck third in last year. Trainer Karl Burke and jockey Clifford Lee had a great season together last year and should have another strong start this season. Shadow Of Light The first Classic of the flat season the 2000 Guineas Stakes is always a spectacle. Nearly £300,000 is on offer here for the winner where Field Of Gold is the big favourite. But at 2/1 he’s no certainty. William Buick is on board the second string Godolphin horse – Ruling Court. While Mickael Barzalona is on board the first, Shadow Of Light of course both trained by Charlie Appleby. He steps up to 1m for the first time and did beat Expanded by a neck here over 7f in the Dewhurst Stakes. This three-year-old colt also won here on soft ground over 6f to beat Whistlejacket by a staggering four lengths. That’s proven to be some great form too so shouldn’t be discounted of putting in a strong run at a track he’s won at twice. Valvano Can go well off a break – placed second to Notable Speech at Kempton in April last year off the back of a 171 days. He also went well behind Bolster at York two starts ago before a solid fifth of 23 at Doncaster in November. Back for the fourth time since being gelded, where this time of year will sure to suit better and back down to 1m2f after featuring at 1m4f for the first time at Doncaster. Jockey Hector Crouch is in great form as is the trainer Ralph Beckett to help make Valvano’s case much stronger.
