The San Antonio Spurs have lost another one of their stars for the remainder of the season.
Point guard De’Aaron Fox will undergo season-ending surgery on Tuesday for tendon damage in his left pinkie, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Thursday.
Spurs phenom Victor Wembanyama is also out for the season due to deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder. The team is also without head coach Gregg Popovich for the remainder of the campaign after the legendary coach suffered what the team called a “mild stroke” in November.
Charania reports that Fox suffered the tendon damage in his hand during training camp in October with the Sacramento Kings and played through the injury all season.
Fox was traded from the Kings to the Spurs ahead of the NBA trade deadline. The Kentucky product appeared in 17 games with the Spurs before his season ended and averaged 19.7 points, 6.8 assists and 4.3 rebounds.
The decision to shut down Fox for the season was made to “expedite the healing process and gain off-season chemistry with the roster based on recovery,” according to Charania.
San Antonio currently sits 12th in the Western Conference, 5.5 games back of the Dallas Mavericks for the final Play-In spot.
