OMG has found a new home.
After taking MLB by storm in 85 games with the New York Mets last season, free-agent infielder Jose Iglesias has agreed to a minor-league contract with the San Diego Padres, according to the New York Post‘s Jon Heyman.
Iglesias hit .337 with an .830 OPS for the Mets in their late-season surge to the playoffs, providing a spark in their lineup and solid up-the-middle defence.
Perhaps more importantly, though, was the vibe shift Iglesias brought to New York’s clubhouse. Moonlighting as the pop star ‘Candelita,’ the 35-year-old’s song OMG became a rallying cry for the Mets and a part of their home run celebration. The team would take photos with a sign inspired by the song after each long ball.
The 12-year veteran even performed after a Mets win at Citi Field in June.
If Iglesias can earn a spot on San Diego’s big-league team, he will earn $3 million with the chance at an extra $1 million in incentives, per Heyman.
The Padres would be Iglesias’s eighth MLB team since debuting with the Boston Red Sox in 2011.
An All-Star in 2015, Iglesias has played in 1,181 career games while batting .283 with 51 home runs.
