Report: NBA investigating Grizzlies’ Ja Morant over finger gun gesture

Ja Morant is back in the NBA’s crosshairs.

The Memphis Grizzlies guard is under investigation by the league after appearing to use a finger fun gesture during the team’s loss to the Golden State Warriors on Tuesday, ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Wednesday.

Warriors guard Buddy Hield is also being looked into for a gesture of his own before Morant’s and the NBA will talk to both players on Wednesday, Charania added.

The Warriors went on to win a 134-125 thriller, led by Stephen Curry’s 52 points and 12 made threes.

Morant was suspended twice in 2023 for a pair of incidents showing firearms on social media.

He was banned for eight games in March, then handed a 25-game suspension to begin the 2023-24 season, which cost him approximately $7.5 million.

Morant, a 25-year-old two-time all-star, has played just 46 games this season amid a series of injuries, averaging 22.7 points per game — his lowest since his sophomore season — to go with 7.4 assists and 4.2 rebounds.

The investigations mark the latest bit of turmoil for the Grizzlies, who fired head coach Taylor Jenkins late in March despite sitting in a playoff spot.

Memphis (44-32) fell to sixth in the West, a half-game behind fifth-place Golden State (44-31), after Tuesday’s loss. The defeat marked the team’s fourth in a row and eighth through its last 10.

The Grizzlies return to the court Thursday for a road game against the Miami Heat, who’ve won straight games.
