Report: Nathan MacKinnon to join Canada for world championship

Two of Nova Scotia’s finest will represent Canada on the world stage.

Team Canada announced Sunday that Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby has been added to the roster for the upcoming world championship in Sweden.

And it appears Nathan MacKinnon will join his long-time friend.

According to a report from The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, MacKinnon’s agent Pat Brisson confirmed that the Colorado Avalanche superstar will also be donning a Canadian sweater.

Crosby and MacKinnon are neighbours in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and last teamed up at the 4 Nations Face-Off in February when they helped lead Canada to gold.

This will be MacKinnon’s first world championship since 2017, while Crosby hasn’t played in one since 2015.

MacKinnon’s NHL season ended in heartbreaking fashion on Saturday, as the Dallas Stars stunned his Avalanche with an epic Game 7 comeback win.

“I’m just in shock, to be honest with you,” MacKinnon said shortly after his season ended.

Meanwhile, Crosby and the Penguins didn’t even make it to the post-season.

So with their Stanley Cup dreams dashed, the two Nova Scotians will try and head into the off-season with a new gold medal instead.
