Red Wings’ Tarasenko among names to watch ahead of NHL trade deadline

With a little under a month to go before the trade deadline, the rumour mill is at last starting to turn.

Though big deals have already gone through — like the blockbuster that sent J.T. Miller to the New York Rangers or the Mikko Rantanen move that caught everyone by surprise — much more is sure to be on the way.

Among the big names to monitor at the deadline is Detroit Red Wings forward Vladimir Tarasenko, who despite having a no-trade clause, has been a topic of conversation, Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported on Hockey Night in Canada‘s latest edition of Saturday Headlines.

“I’ve heard there’s been some noise around him,” Friedman said. “Red Wings have gotten much better, they’re in the race. A lot of the players have started to play better but it’s kind of struggled to be a fit. … I’ve just heard that in his particular case, there’s been some conversation around him.”

Tarasenko joined the Red Wings as a free agent in the off-season, putting pen to paper on a two-year, $9.5 million contract that comes with a full no-trade clause in year one and a modified eight-team no-trade clause next year.

The two-time Stanley Cup winner has struggled to live up to expectations in his time in the Motor City, with seven goals and 15 assists through 53 games. He scored earlier on Saturday in Detroit’s 6-3 loss to the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The 33-year-old is no stranger to trade rumours, as he’s been unable to settle down in one place since being dealt from the St. Louis Blues in the 2022-23 season — the team with which he spent his first 11 years and won his first cup. He was traded by the Ottawa Senators to the Florida Panthers last year en route to a second Stanley Cup.

Detroit is currently 28-22-5 and sits fifth in the Atlantic Division.

For other names to watch, Friedman reported that New York Islanders forward Brock Nelson, Blues forward Brayden Schenn and Chicago Blackhawks forward Ryan Donato have been players floated around in possible moves.

“Brock Nelson is the one that a lot of people are really watching to see what happens to him,” Friedman said. “I think the Islanders are about to begin a real attempt to try to sign him and will see how that develops over the next couple of weeks.”

Nelson has had a steady year for the in-the-mix Islanders, tallying 16 goals and 17 assists through 54 games. The 33-year-old has spent the entirety of his 12-year NHL career on Long Island since being selected by the team 30th overall in the first round of the 2010 NHL Draft.

He’s set to become an unrestricted free agent at the end of this season and is in the final year of a six-year, $36 million contract.

“Brayden Schenn, his name got out this week,” Friedman added. “I’ve heard the Blues have set a very, very high price on him. The Blues have given an indication that they’re willing to talk about a whole lot of their players, but I’ve heard the price is very, very high on their captain.”

Schenn — who has been with the Blues since the 2017-18 season and won the 2019 Stanley Cup with them — has been a steady two-way presence for St. Louis this season. He has 11 goals, 19 assists, 141 hits and 32 blocked shots through 55 games.

The 33-year-old is in year five of an eight-year, $52 million contract signed back in 2020. He carries a $6.5 million cap hit and would be on the books until the 2027-28 season — his age-36 campaign — for any team looking to add him.

Lastly, Friedman weighed in on Donato, who may be the easiest to get of the three above forwards.

“I think a few of the Canadian teams are looking around on him,” Friedman said about the upcoming unrestricted free agent. “I think Edmonton is one of them and he is doing nothing to hurt his value.”

The 28-year-old has had a breakout campaign for Chicago, tallying a career-high 19 goals to go along with 18 assists through 53 games this season.

Donato joined the Blackhawks in free agency ahead of the 2023-24 season, signing a two-year, $4 million deal ($2 million AAV).

“I think because of the price and the fact he’s a UFA, he’s gonna be a pretty attractive piece, and like I said, I think a few of the Canadian teams are around him,” Friedman said.
