Rajamouli, Kaufman, Kelly, Leitch Set Next Films

Following the massive international success of “RRR,” the film’s director SS Rajamouli appears to have begun filming his next project, a ‘globe-trotting adventure’ described as the biggest and most expensive Indian film ever made.

According to World of Reel, the project will travel through the forests of Kenya and other exotic locations and has previously been dubbed an “Indian Indiana Jones”. Priyanka Chopra, Chatrapathi Sekhar and Mahesh Babu with Chopra having been filming her scenes for “well over a month now”.

The report indicates production will run throughout the year with the end result being two three-hour movies releasing in 2027. Several titles are under consideration with “Maharaj” being the most likely candidate at present.

He’s not the only filmmaker returning to screens. The site also indicates that acclaimed scribe Charlie Kaufman may be returning to the director’s chair with a film of his titled “Later the War” potentially beginning production this year – his first directorial effort since “I’m Thinking of Ending Things” in 2020.

A listing on Independent Talent indicates Kaufman will direct and Sarah Green will produce the film which will be made this year via WayPoint Entertainment. The project was also rumored to be secretly shopped around this month at EFM Berlin.

Next, a Production Weekly listing has “Donnie Darko” and “Southland Tales” director Richard Kelly starting production on a new film this Fall – no title, cast or story details but producer Ted Hamm is also attached and may be helming with Kelly only writing/producing.

Kelly recently claimed to The Movie That Made Me that he was working on multiple different projects and had “enough screenplay material to last me for the rest of my life.”

Finally, THR reports that “Deadpool 2,” “The Fall Guy” and “Bullet Train” director David Leitch has set up a new heist movie at Amazon MGM Studios and Imagine Entertainment. Leitch, Kelly McCormick, Brian Grazer, Jeb Brody, and Allan Mandelbaum produce.

The story follows a group of bank robbers who use social media to document their heists and play a cat-and-mouse game with the authorities. Mark Bianculli (“Hunters”) pens the script.
