‘Possession: Kerasukan’ – Netflix’s Quietly Released Indonesian Remake of ‘Possession’

Fans of Andrzej Żuławski’s 1981 psychological horror movie Possession weren’t exactly thrilled to learn that a remake is on the way from Paramount and Smile filmmaker Parker Finn, but director Razka Robby Ertanto beat the remake to the punch with Possession: Kerasukan.

The loose Indonesian remake of the cult horror film has quietly been available to stream on Netflix for months.

The synopsis reads the same, “Returning from military duty, Faris is shocked to learn that his wife wants a divorce. He decides to investigate and discovers a sinister secret.”

In Żuławski’s film, which recently received a new 4K restoration, “Banned upon release in 1981, Żuławski’s stunningly choreographed nightmare of a marriage unraveling is an experience unlike any other. Professional spy Mark (Neill) returns to his West Berlin home to find his wife Anna (Adjani) insistent on a divorce. As Anna’s frenzied behavior becomes ever more alarming, Mark discovers a truth more sinister than his wildest suspicions.”

Actors Sam Neill and Isabelle Adjani, in the 1981 film, devote every fiber of their being to their roles, with Adjani’s memorable performance serving as inspiration for recent horror films like The First Omen. Disturbing, unnerving, and confusing, Possession is more of an emotional experience than a linear narrative, and there’s nothing else like it. Even its Indonesian remake, Possession: Kerasukan.

The remake’s official trailer isn’t subtitled, but it does feature recognizable imagery from Żuławski’s film. Noticeably missing are any tentacles, though.

Darius Sinathrya and Carissa Perusset star in Possession: Kerasukan as the estranged couple. Sara Fajira, Arswendy Bening Swara, Nugie, and Sulthan Hamonangan also star. The film was penned by screenwriter Lele Laila.

Possession: Kerasukan isn’t the only Indonesian remake quietly lurking on Netflix, either. Monster gives an Indonesian update on Justin Powell and David Charbonier’s intense 2021 thriller The Boy Behind the Door, and is available to stream now, too.
