Philadelphia Eagles plotting ‘big swing’ for $125m superstar in next Saquon Barkley-like move

The Philadelphia Eagles will be looking to defend their Super Bowl title in 2025 – and preparations are already under way. General manager Howie Roseman hit a home run last spring, signing All-Pros Saquon Barkley and Zack Baun in free agency. Free agent signing Barkley was key to Philly’s Super Bowl successGetty He then went on to select cornerbacks Quinyon Mitchell and Cooper DeJean in the first two rounds of the NFL Draft. Running back Barkley had a record-breaking first season with Philly, while DeJean capped his rookie campaign with a stunning pick six in the Super Bowl. Repeating that kind of success in the offseason this time around certainly won’t be easy, given the Eagles have limited cap space and several key free agents. But according to reports, GM Roseman is still plotting a ‘big swing’. On the latest edition of The Athletic’s Scoop City podcast, NFL insider Dianna Russini claimed that the Eagles could trade for Myles Garrett. “Here’s what some people are saying right now: Howie is willing to move on from some of these guys because he’s looking to make a big swing,” Russini said. “And that big swing would be for Myles Garrett. “Some of these guys that you think are a sure thing may not be a sure thing to return to Philly.” The name of impending free-agent linebacker Baun was floated on the podcast, with the Eagles said to be ‘prioritizing’ his return ahead of the 2025 season. Josh Sweat, Mekhi Becton, Avonte Maddox and Milton Williams are some of the other key names that could hit the market, but Roseman will likely still have to get creative with his cap space. Garrett has requested a trade from the Browns and the Eagles are said to be interestedGetty Roseman is said to be plotting a ‘big swing’ for the defensive star In a written report for The Athletic, Russini added that an anonymous NFL GM told her ‘Garrett could be this year’s version of Saquon Barkley for Howie.’ “He’s an impact add and isn’t a free-agent overpay. Howie’s not afraid to try stuff, and it fits where they are as a team,” the GM told her. Roseman, meanwhile, has already discussed his team’s offseason priorities, and last week asked Eagles fans for their patience. “It may look different – some of the moves that we may have to make here may not be what are necessarily on other people’s minds,” he said. “It’s probably not going to look like the conventional wisdom thinks it should look. “I would just ask our fans to just have patience throughout the offseason. The offseason doesn’t stop in free agency. The offseason doesn’t stop in the draft.” Garrett wants to challenge for Super Bowls and Philly would be the perfect place to do thatGetty While Roseman has asked for patience, if he can land a stud like Garrett, there would certainly be no complaints from the Philly faithful. The star pass rusher made clear his desire to leave the Cleveland Browns with a trade request last month. In his statement, the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year, who signed a five-year, $125million deal with Cleveland back in 2020, cited a desire to win. “As a kid dreaming of the NFL, all I focused on was the ultimate goal of winning a Super Bowl – and that goal fuels me today more than ever,” Garrett wrote. “While I’ve loved calling this city my home, my desire to win and compete on the biggest stages won’t allow me to be complacent. “The goal was never to go from Cleveland to Canton, it has always been to compete for and win a Super Bowl.” For Garrett, there would arguably be no better place to land than with the defending Super Bowl champions. And while the Eagles already boast a dominant pass rush, adding a stud like Garrett would solidify them as the best in the league as they chase back-to-back titles.
