Patrice Evra gives surprise update on possible MMA fight with Luis Suarez
Patrice Evra has revealed that Luis Suarez has not ruled out a surprise MMA fight. Evra is undergoing training ahead of his first MMA fight under the PFL promotion, which is lined up for the end of May. Evra and Suarez’s feud dates back to 2011Getty It seems their feud, which dates back more than 14 years, is still going strong. Suarez was found guilty of racially abusing the former Man United defender during a match at Liverpool in 2011. The Frenchman accused the striker of using ‘insulting words’ seven times over two minutes in reference to Evra’s skin colour. Suarez claimed he used the word once in a friendly manner as typical in Uruguayan culture. But The FA banned the Liverpool player for eight games after a two month investigation and six-day hearing. In an interview with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, Evra said: “When the PFL asked me who I would like, I said Luis Suarez because I had a beef with him on the back in the day when I was captain of United and he played for Liverpool. “He had some racist abuse. I don’t call him a racist, it’s just that they used some racist words, and I want to do this fight… I think the world wants to see that fight.” Liverpool did not appeal the January 2012 verdict and maintained his innocence with Liverpool players wearing shirts in support of their teammate. “I don’t know if it’s true, because I’m always careful, but apparently his manager contacted the PFL,” said Evra. “I would be surprised, because to be honest he is still playing football and this is completely different – he could get injured.” Suarez has responded to Evra’s calls for a fightGetty When the two met again for the first time after the incident Suarez refused to shake Evra’s hand. And despite winning the return fixture at Old Trafford it is clear Evra wants to battle Suarez again. Speaking to talkSPORT PFL managing director James Frewin said: “I can confirm Friday May 23rd Patrice Evra will fight in the PFL smart cage in the Aqua Arena in Paris, France. “I sat with him and I asked him why and firstly he said why not, and then I said, but really why? “He said you know where I come from. I’ve always been fighting and he’s one of the most accomplished elite footballers that we’ve ever seen to grace a field.” Over a 725 match career, Evra won a total of eight league titles at Man United and Juventus as well as a Champions League in 2008. Evra spoke about his MMA plansX Frewin revealed: “Khabib Nurmagomedov is tutoring him and Cedric Doumbe, one of the best kickboxers in European history and world history is training him. “He’s considering having some former footballers that he played with walk him out.”
