OpenAI has some of the most advanced AI in the world, but that doesn’t mean it’s not vulnerable to security attacks. Unfortunately, its AI tools can be hijacked and weaponized to cause some real harm. As such, the company has a bug bounty program that awards people for finding bugs and security flaws. Due to rising security concerns, OpenAI is raising its bug bounty by a LARGE margin.

As it stood, OpenAI had a bug bounty of $20k. That’s a hefty sum of money, and it’s necessary to reduce the number of people who can take advantage of the company. As with any bug bounty, it’s on a spectrum. If you find a bug, you’re not guaranteed to receive the full amount. However, a few thousand could still brighten your day.

OpenAI is raising its bug bounty (by a LOT)

The fact that OpenAI is raising its bug bounty means that the company is taking security more seriously. Recently, it was discovered that AI agents could be used as weapons to craft and send phishing attacks. This should come as no surprise, as bad actors have been using AI to boost their practices, and this doesn’t bode well for anyone.

But, do you know what would bode well for you? How about earning money for finding security issues? OpenAI is taking the original $20k for the bug bounty and raising it to $100k. Again, if you find a bug, you’re not guaranteed to get the full amount, but it’s still worth a shot.

As AI tools become more accessible, it’s more important than ever to prioritize security. With certain AI security regulations being haphazardly tossed out the window in some places, it’ll be harder to ensure proper cybersecurity in the future. So, offering more money to people who can find bugs is a good start.

Will this actually help?

There’s no telling if an increased bug bounty will really be the solution. More people will flock to find bugs, but the core of the issue is that the very technology that’s supposed to make the world a better place can be used by bad actors to do the opposite. For every vulnerability that a well-meaning person finds, there’s one that a hacker finds. Let’s just hope that we see some positive results from this.
