It’s the end of the road for the “Night Court” reboot and “Lopez vs. Lopez” at NBC.
NBC opted not to renew the Melissa Rauch-led sitcom or the George and Mayan Lopez comedy series for a fourth season, TheWrap has learned. The news comes just days after “Night Court” aired its Season 3 finale, which left off on a cliffhanger surrounding the romantic life of judge Abby Stone (Rauch). “Lopez vs. Lopez” wrapped its run in February.
The cuts come ahead of NBC’s upfront presentation on Monday, with the network having to make tough decisions to make room for NBA programming starting this fall.
While “Night Court” won’t return to NBC, Warner Bros. TV, which produces the show, is hoping to find a new home for series, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap.
Following in the footsteps of the original “Night Court” sitcom, which ran from 1984 to 1992, the reboot series follows Abby, the daughter of Harry Anderson’s judge Harry Stone, as she presides over a night court in New York City. Original “Night Court” star John Larroquette also reprises his role as Dan Fielding, who takes on a father-like role to Abby following Harry’s death.
Original “Night Court” star Marsha Warfield also begin appearing in the reboot in the Season 1 finale, and has appeared in several episodes across the second and third installments. Notably, the reboot series portrayed a more authentic version of Warfield’s Roz, making her character gay, in alignment with Warfield’s own sexuality.
In addition to Rauch and Larroquette, the main cast for “Night Court” Season 3 included Lacretta, Nyambi Nyambi and Wendie Malick, and had previously starred India de Beaufort and Kapil Talwalkar in the first season.
Ahead of the Season 3 finale, Rauch told TheWrap she would “do this show until Abby Stone was a geriatric judge.”
“I’m having the time of my life getting to do it, and I truly feel like a little kid who got to step through my TV screen into a show that I love so much,” Rauch said. “I’ll do it for as long as they’ll have us. I’m hopeful. I love what we’ve created this season, and I feel like, as we saw from the cliffhanger, there’s so many more stories to tell.”
“Night Court” is produced by Warner Bros. TV.
Starring father-daughter duo George Lopez and Mayan Lopez, who co-created the series alongside Debby Wolfe, “Lopez vs. Lopez” followed a working-class, old-school Latino after moving in with his Gen Z daughter and worked to rebuild their dysfunctional relationship.
Selenis Leyva, Brice Gonzalez, Matt Shively and Al Madrigal also starred in the comedy series.
Wolfe and George Lopez executive produce with Bruce Helford, Michael Rotenberg, and Katie Newman. It is produced by Universal Television in association with Mohawk Productions, Travieso Productions, Mi Vida Loba, and 3 Arts.
