Mouat wins historic fourth GSOC title of season at AMJ Players’ Championship

TORONTO — It was a historic day for the Grand Slam of Curling on multiple levels to wrap up the season at the AMJ Players’ Championship.

Scotland’s Team Bruce Mouat became the first to win four titles in the series during a single season after pulling off an unreal raise in an extra end to edge Switzerland’s Team Yannick Schwaller 6-5 during Sunday’s men’s final.

Mouat, third Grant Hardie, second Bobby Lammie and lead Hammy McMillan Jr. captured three straight out of the gate at the HearingLife Tour Challenge, Co-op Canadian Open and KIOTI National.

It was also a historic sweep for Scotland in the men’s division. Although Mouat’s streak ended at the WFG Masters with a loss to Canada’s Team Brad Jacobs in the semifinals, the title still went to Scotland as countrymen Team Ross Whyte came out on top.

Mouat was nearly at a loss for words as it hadn’t sunk in yet what his team had achieved.

“A bit numb, a bit trying to figure out what just happened,” Mouat said. “I think the fact that we’ve won four, Team Whyte won the other one, all five are in Scotland, it’s pretty special. We’ve made some history, we won the worlds, there’s just too many emotions to try and figure it all out. It’s going to take me some time. I’ve got four days before I start training for the mixed doubles (worlds), so I’ll use those four days to try and figure it all out, but I’m very happy, obviously.”

“It’s generally stuff we’d never imagine we’d be achieving,” Hardie added. “I’m not really sure how to put it into words, but four in a season is just beyond what we thought we could achieve. So excited to go into next season and try and keep that going.”

Mouat has now reached double-digit Grand Slam of Curling title wins as the AMJ Players’ Championship was the 10th of his career — all with the same lineup.

“We’ve worked so hard. The boys have put up with a lot of my things that I bring to the team,” Mouat said. “I just have to thank them a lot that they stuck with me and really supported me. We support each other. There’s a big family unit and you see that when our supporting fans come out. We travel in a pack basically. We love everyone who comes with us and joins us and we have to thank them for motivating us to do this.”

Hardie echoed those sentiments.

“An amazing group of guys,” he said. “We’ve got a team back at British Curling as well that helps us. It’s just so much fun winning with them, 10 as well, it’s pretty special.”

There was no rest for the world’s best as Sunday was Team Mouat’s 16th consecutive day on the ice.

The club arrived straight from winning gold in the world championship in Moose Jaw, Sask., defeating Schwaller in that final as well, to face Canada’s Team Rachel Homan in a charity skins game Monday at the first Rio Mare Battle of the Sexes presented by The Curling Group. Mouat raised $10,000 for Charlie Boy’s Cancer Fundraiser and Homan collected $2,000 for the Sandra Schmirler Foundation.

Mouat posted a 6-1 record in the AMJ Players’ Championship — with his lone loss to Whyte during pool play — and collected $60,000 from the prize purse.

“It’s not a bad treble, is it,” Hardie said with a smile. “You just roll with momentum, high spirits, and we just rolled through kind of three weeks and enjoyed every minute. I don’t think we had even a second to really think of what we did at the worlds and how good of an achievement that was. It’s just straight back on the ice and keep going.

“I think this week, in particular, we tried so hard to be relaxed and just enjoy it. If the results went our way, brilliant, and if not, it wasn’t going to be the end of our season. The fact that it did go our way, and what a finish as well there, is just unbelievable. It’s incredible.”

Mouat, who has won 10 career Grand Slam titles, posted a 6-1 record in the AMJ Players’ Championship — with his lone loss to Whyte during pool play — and collected $60,000 from the prize purse.

Schwaller, fourth Benoît Schwarz-van Berkel, second Sven Michel and lead Pablo Lachat-Couchepin earned $40,000. It was Schwaller’s second runner-up result in three years at the event as he continues to search for his first Grand Slam title.

The two teams started the season in August, facing off in the Baden Masters final, and fittingly enough, bookended the campaign with another showdown as they left it all out there.

“It just feels like we’re playing against them all the time,” Hardie said. “They’re such a good team and you know you’re not going to get the better of them every time. Thankfully, we were able to flip the hammer there in the second half.”

Team Schwaller turned up the dial out of the gate, but Mouat made back-to-back clutch double takeouts to bail out his side and force Schwarz-van Berkel to draw for just a single.

Schwaller grabbed a 2-0 lead in the third as Mouat had to draw for one, and his shooter came up a wee bit short to give up a steal.

Mouat recovered in the fourth and drew for a deuce to tie it up, then put the pressure on in the fifth with three counters to force Schwarz-van Berkel to tap for one.

After Mouat tapped to guarantee a single in the sixth, out came the measuring stick for a pesky second stone sitting on the edge of the 12-foot circle by the tee line that gave him the go-ahead second point and a 4-3 advantage.

Mouat went up by two in the seventh as Schwarz-van Berkel’s double attempt missed the second counter, rolling under and away.

It looked like three points and the win was in play for Schwaller in the eighth until Mouat came through in the clutch again on a double takeout. Schwarz-van Berkel’s nose tap for two sent the game into an extra.

Mouat was short on a draw to the button with his first skip stone in OT, but he made no mistake on his last with the raise to pop out Schwaller’s shot rock.

“Not really the shot we hoped we would have for the win, but the second Bruce let it go, we knew we were close as long as we don’t make a mess of the line call,” Hardie said. “He had thrown it good enough to make it and thankfully, we did that and Bobby swept it and held it perfectly.”

Mouat pumped his fist and roared, “C’mon! Yes!” then exhaled as he clearly exhausted whatever emotions were left in the tank.

“I thought I made a big mistake with my first one. Making sure you were heavy there was probably the right thing, I guess, making sure it was at least there to give the sweepers a chance,” Mouat said. “I was obviously very motivated to make the second one to make up for that.

“It was just a great team shot: line calls, swept perfectly. Those are our favourite shots to make, obviously. We’re four guys who work so hard to make the shots that we do, it’s not always easy.”

While the Grand Slam of Curling season has come to a close, it’s not the end of the line for Mouat, who will team up with Jenn Dodds to compete in the World Mixed Doubles Curling Championship, April 26-May 3, in Fredericton, N.B. Mouat and Dodds will look to qualify Team GB for next year’s Olympics at the event as well.

“Still got a lot of pressure to meet,” he said, “but we’re in a good spot.”

Earlier Sunday, Switzerland’s Team Silvana Tirinzoni defeated Canada’s Team Rachel Homan 5-4 to successfully defend the women’s title.
