Most Republicans want Democrats to push back on Trump policies: Survey

Republicans may disagree with Democrats' positions when they push back against President Trump, but most want to see the opposing party at least put up a fight for their views, a new poll has found.

The Pew Research Center poll released Wednesday — Trump's 101st day of his second term — found 54 percent of Republican respondents said it is at least "somewhat important" for Democratic elected officials to "push hard" against Trump when they disagree with him.

More than 80 percent of Republicans said Trump is doing an "excellent" or "good" job of pushing hard for his policies, regardless of whether Democratic lawmakers agree, and 88 percent said it's at least "somewhat" important for him to push, per the survey.

The poll did not phrase the question as an either/or option, so both positions could be simultaneously held on Democrats or Trump sticking up for their policy beliefs.

The findings come as Trump's favorability overall has sagged at the three-month mark. A separate survey released Wednesday from Decision Desk HQ/NewsNation found 44 percent of registered voters surveyed approve of the president's job performance, while 56 percent disapprove.

An overwhelming majority of people surveyed by Pew said it is at least "somewhat important" for Trump and Democratic lawmakers to find common ground and work together, with similar shares — 85 percent each — agreeing that Trump should find areas of agreement with Democrats and that Democrats should look for consensus points with the president.

About 43 percent of Republicans said it's "extremely" or "very" important for Trump to find common ground with Dems, while 44 percent of Democrats said it's on their party's leaders to reach a consensus with him.

The Pew survey was conducted from April 7-13 among 3,589 U.S. adults. The margin of error is 3 percentage points.
