‘Minecraft’ warning issued by cinema: “Loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated”

A Minecraft Movie

A cinema in the UK has issued a warning to those attending screenings of A Minecraft Movie, following raucous behaviour at other screenings of the film.

The film adaptation of the popular video game has become a box office hit, enjoying the biggest opening weekend since Marvel’s Deadpool and Wolverine last July. It has also prompted cinemagoers to react to the various references to the game’s characters in the film, resulting in reactions such as loud cheering and shouting, or throwing popcorn at the screen.

First reported by BBC News, the sign at the branch of Cineworld in Witney, Oxfordshire, says: “Any form of anti-social behaviour, especially anything that may disturb other guests such as loud screaming, clapping and shouting will not be tolerated. Anyone who is found to be acting in this manner will be removed from the screening and not entitled to a refund”.

A Cineworld spokesperson reached out to NME to clarify the chain’s policy, stating the following:

“To make sure everyone has a blast, we ask that all cinemagoers respect cinema etiquette. For fans wanting to whoop, yelp and clap their way through this block-busting adventure, we have created special Chicken Jockey 4DX screenings at Cineworld cinemas nationwide.”

Videos have circulated around social media of cinema audiences reacting to moments such as the introduction of Jack Black’s character Steve, a tribute to a popular gamer who passed away, and an appearance of a popular character named Chicken Jockey.

The film has drawn comparisons with 2022’s #Gentleminions phenomenon, where teenagers who grew up with the Despicable Me characters The Minions went to screenings of Minions: The Rise of Gru in suits and cheered loudly during the film.
