When ChatGPT first hit the market, it was all about making the best chatbot, but things have changed since then. Now, companies are racing to create the best AI deep research tool. Today, Microsoft just unveiled Researcher and Analyst, two new tools that will help you research and analyze data.

These tools should come as no surprise, as other companies like Google have come out with tools like these. The thinking behind it is to take the effort out of doing research. Many projects require users to do deep research into different subjects, which can take quite some time. Well, AI tools are emerging that do the research for you. So, it seems that research assistants are the new frontier in AI.

Microsoft unveils Researcher and Analyst, two new research tools

It’s pretty easy to know what these tools do by their names. The brains behind Researcher is OpenAI’s model o3 Deep Research. This is a reasoning model, so you will be able to see its chain of thought as it’s generating the response.

When you use Researcher, it will use the information you provide from your company. Say, you want it to retrieve some information for you, it will dive through the files and documents in your Microsoft 365 account and find it for you.

Not only that, but it can actually create documents for you based on your information. There’s an example below. In the example, we see the tool reasoning in realtime. The video had to be sped up a bit because the full process takes a few minutes. This could be a great tool for people who need a researcher on their team.

Next up, there’s Analyst. This tool is built to think like a data scientist. This one’s based on OpenAI’s o3 mini model. The core function of this tool is to take in massive quantities of data and answer questions about it.

If you have a large dataset and you need to gather information from it, you would typically need a data scientist. Well, with Analyst, you’ll be able to ask whatever questions about the data that you may have. Analyst will look through the information and give you clear and concise insights into your dataset.

These features will roll out to Microsoft 365 Copilot users in April. It’s part of the Frontier program that basically lets Copilot users test out new features early.
