It’s the first time in Masters history that any competitor has begun a round with six straight threes on the scorecard.
McIlroy carded a four on the par-four seventh to finish one short of the record for consecutive threes on any stretch at The Masters.
The 35-year-old from Northern Ireland is at Augusta with his 11th chance to complete the career Grand Slam.
The world No. 2 is also looking to end a major drought that stretches back to his 2014 PGA Championship victory.
McIlroy has already enjoyed a strong start to the PGA Tour season, claiming wins at The Players Championship and the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am.
He is playing his third round at Augusta alongside Canada’s Corey Conners.
