Maple Leafs’ John Tavares records 1,100th career point

Slowly but surely, John Tavares is climbing the all-time scoring leaderboard.

The Toronto Maple Leafs centre notched three points (two goals, one assist) before the halfway mark of Thursday’s game against the New York Rangers, giving him 1,100 for his career.

Tavares now sits 68th all time in points and three back of Maple Leafs legend Frank Mahovlich. He’s one of just eight active players to have reached 1,100 points.

The first-overall pick in 2009 by the New York Islanders, Tavares entered the NHL as one of the most highly touted prospects ever.

Whether he’s lived up to that billing is in the eye of the beholder given his limited playoff success and brief turn as a villain on Long Island after fleeing in free agency for his hometown Maple Leafs.

Still, most of Tavares’ career production came in New York — he left with 621 points as an Islander, and is now up to 579 with Toronto.

Tavares’ linemate William Nylander also reached a milestone Thursday, with his assist on Tavares’ opening goal representing the 600th point of his career.

Nylander became the fastest active Swede to reach that benchmark, and added another helper in the second period to match Simon Gagne and Brendan Morrison for 381st on the all-time list.
