“Poker Face” star Natasha Lyonne and “The OA” star/creator Brit Marling will team with technology innovator and Big Tech skeptic Jaron Lanier on a new feature film titled “Uncanny Valley”.
The project is backed by Asteria, an AI-based studio founded by Lyonne and filmmaker/entrepreneur Bryn Mooser. Lyonne will direct from a script she wrote with Marling, and both will star.
The story centers on a teenage girl who becomes unmoored by a hugely popular augmented reality (AR) video game in a parallel present. The movie will blend traditional live action and game elements created by Lanier, Lyonne and Marling.
The project will rely heavily on AI tech from Asteria partner Moonvalley. The project will use a generative AI model called ‘Marey’ which is built only on data that has been copyright-cleared.
An Asteria rep says the aim is to “blend traditional storytelling techniques with cutting-edge AI technologies to create a radical new cinematic experience.”
It’s not clear where the project will first be released – theatrical, streaming or elsewhere.
